Waalhaven Zuidzijde harbour area, Rotterdam
2007 – 2012
Office building. Ca. 8000 m² gfa
Port of Rotterdam
In the coming decades the Waalhaven harbour area in Rotterdam will be the scene of a major transformation process. With the completion of the Maasvlakte 2 harbour area development, the westward shift of the harbour activities that was initiated with the construction of Maasvlakte 1 will be continued. In this way the area will be freed up for new economic activities.
The Waalhaven Zuidzijde harbour area has been designated as a location where new offices can be built. With its spectacular waterside views, the location is an outstanding setting for prestigious harbour-related office activities.
The Port City project comprises four office buildings, each with a total floor area of 8000 m². Parking facilities are located underneath the wooden “ship’s deck” on which the buildings are situated. This deck, which is open to the public, will also provide space for small-scale pavilions with cafés and restaurants.
The building by MVSA is situated at the head of the “ship’s deck”. The form of the building is inspired by its position within the urban fabric and its views. The fluidly designed, imposing black volume evokes nautical references.
